The party also stressed the importance of peace and order as essential components of the New Society, which often justified the imposition of martial law and the suppression of political dissent.<br /><br />However, the legacy of the New Society Movement and the Marcos regime is highly controversial. While some achievements in infrastructure and development were made, the period was also marked by human rights abuses, suppression of free speech, and widespread corruption.
