Air conditioning has become an American necessity. But at what cost?

Additional air-conditioning in buildings and other spaces, which is also driven by rising incomes, population growth and urbanization, means that the world could use more than double the electricity it does now to stay cool, leading to more planet-warming emissions, according to research released by the United Nations on Tuesday.“Extreme heat is now the deadliest weather event in my country at least, but this is true in many other places,” said John Kerry, President Biden’s climate envoy, who joined representatives from other nations in Dubai to discuss the pledge.He added that finding ways to cool down in climate-friendly ways was critical. “We want to lay out a pathway to reduce cooling-related emissions across all sectors and increase the access to sustainable cooling.”If current trends hold, 10 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2050 could come from air-conditioning and other efforts to keep cool, the U.N. report said.“The cooling sector must grow to protect everyone from rising temperatures,” said Inger Andersen, executive director of the United Nations Environment Program. “But this growth must not come at the cost of the energy transition and more intense climate impacts.”

Russia sentences US soldier to nearly 4 years in prison

A Russian court on Monday sentenced a member of the American military to three years and nine months in prison on charges that he stole from and threatened to kill his girlfriend, according to state media.Staff Sgt. Gordon Black, 34, is alleged to have grabbed his Russian girlfriend by the neck while in a friend’s apartment in the far eastern city of Vladivostok in May, Russian state-run news agency TASS reported.Black’s girlfriend also accused him of stealing 10,000 rubles ($113) from her wallet.U.S. Army spokesperson Cynthia Smith earlier confirmed to POLITICO that Russian authorities had detained a soldier in Vladivostok on charges of “criminal misconduct.” The Army had notified the soldier’s family, she said.Melody Jones, Black’s mother, told American broadcaster NBC that Black and his girlfriend had been seeing each other in South Korea for over a year and that her son “wanted to see her for the last time before going home.”“He met her in the bar where she was working, and they’ve been together, on and off, for about a year and a half. I’ve never met her in person, but I’ve spoken to her over Messenger. My motherly instincts told me something was wrong with her,” Jones said.
